Instructions:
1. Activate the Yeast
In a small bowl, mix warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let sit for 5 minutes until frothy. If it doesn’t bubble, the yeast may be inactive—start over with fresh yeast.
2. Mix the Dough
- In a large bowl, whisk together 3 ½ cups flour and salt.
- Make a well in the center and add the yeast mixture, softened butter, and honey/oil (if using).
- Stir with a wooden spoon or hands until combined.
3. Knead the Dough
Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes, adding flour as needed, until smooth and elastic.
4. First Rise
- Place dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp towel or plastic wrap, and let rise in a warm spot for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
5. Shape & Second Rise
- Punch down the dough to release air. Shape into a loaf and place in a greased 9×5-inch loaf pan or on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Cover and let rise again for 30 minutes until puffy.
6. Bake
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown and hollow-sounding when tapped. (Internal temp should reach 190°F/88°C.)
- Cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.

✔ Rising issues? Check yeast freshness and ensure a warm environment.
✔ Customize it! Add herbs, seeds, or cheese for extra flavor.
✔ Storage: Keep in a paper bag at room temp for up to 3 days, or freeze for longer storage.
